Weekend Question: How did you get started making soaps? What was the first product you made? Do you ever take on new hires or apprentices?
I’m working on adding more content to the Ms. Andry website so it can feel like more of a community and we can all get to know one another better. Last week I linked to a survey (which you can still take!) and asked if folks had any questions for me, so here I am answering them!
How did you get started making soaps? What was the first product you made?
I started really thinking about and planning for the company in late 2015, after quitting freelance illustration. I wanted to be able to channel my creativity into something that was tactile and useful and useable and personal. That’s a really great pullquote huh? To be honest, one night when I was awake entirely too late I got the name “Soaprah” stuck in my head and couldn’t stop obsessing over the idea of making soap with ridiculous pun names. All of the deep, meaningful crap came later. My first product was Furiosoap- a white and black soap bar with charcoal, mint, and oatmeal. I very desperately need to bring it back to the store!
Do you ever take on new hires or apprentices?
This is one of my biggest goals. Right now, almost all of the creating is done by me (Alex!) and I have some help with packaging orders and planning from family and friends. I would love to be able to delegate more things out to other folks because wearing all of the hats for a small business- design, creating, cleaning up, marketing, customer service- is hard. Really damn hard. But my main goal is to grow Ms. Andry into a company that employs lots of people, with great wages, and tons of support for disabilities and healthcare, parenting and families, religious and cultural practices, and any other types of inclusivity we can manage. You know, like companies should be doing for folks who spend a huge amount of their time there.
